SUPERSENSE developed a Heritage Interpretation and Wayfinding Strategy for a new Science facility at the Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College Campus, implementing concepts outlined in the document and contributing to the site’s initial masterplan and placemaking.
The interpretation strategy enriches the connections between learning topics such as science, social enterprise, well-being, and collaboration, and integrates them with the College’s heritage, core values, and achievements. Through thoughtful integration into architecture and landscape, interpretation aims to humanise spaces and engage students and visitors with stimulating and motivational themes, creating a distinctive and memorable experience for the college community.
A standout feature is an architectural interpretation of stained glass windows, which honour the school’s religious foundation while reflecting the purpose of the new campus building. Glazed panes in the 4-level stairwell atrium showcase microscopic scientific images of organisms and cells, illuminated in the evening to enhance their impact. In the gymnasium, large-scale historical images of Monte students engaged in sports activities add a nostalgic touch.
Additionally, landscaped areas feature machined bronze inlays that highlight Mercy values and connections to Aboriginal culture. These interpretive elements collectively contribute to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College’s heritage and values among students, staff, and visitors alike.
